Morning light slices across the tropical sea as a speedboat eases out of Sorong harbor and the limestone karsts of Raja Ampat begin to rise like weathered guardians. The first stop, Pasir Timbul, appears only when the tide allows—a bright ribbon of sand daring you to step out onto it for photos and quick walks. From there the boat threads toward Piaynemo, where a climb of roughly 300 stepped terraces rewards you with the classic, staggered islands and jade channels that make Raja Ampat famous.
