The trip begins before sunrise in Hue, on a slow ribbon of highway that eases into the limestone hinterland. Rolling rice paddies give way to karst ridges; steam rises off the road and the guide points out the Ho Chi Minh Trail snaking through forested hills. By afternoon you’re boarding a wooden boat that slips into Phong Nha — water reflecting stalactites like an upside-down forest as the engine’s hum fades and the cave’s scale takes over.
