Morning light cuts across the Gulf as the minivan leaves Aqaba, and by midmorning the road delivers you to Petra's visitor center. From there it's a 700‑meter walk to the mouth of the Siq, a 1.2 km-long gorge whose layered sandstone walls rise more than 80 meters and funnel you toward the city carved in stone. When the Treasury appears it's sudden — an ornate façade set into red rock — then the route opens to colonnaded streets, Byzantine churches, the Roman theater and the Royal Tombs. Climbers will test calves on the 800+ steps to the Monastery; the summit view rewards the effort with sweeping views back across Wadi Araba.

Petra was developed by the Nabataeans from the 6th century BCE and later saw Roman and Byzantine influence; Wadi Rum has been a Bedouin homeland for millennia and figures in modern Middle Eastern history.
Both Petra and Wadi Rum are fragile sandstone ecosystems managed by Jordanian authorities; stick to marked routes, avoid carving rock, and use local guides to minimize impact.
