Morning on Pergasingan Hill opens with sharp light along a grassy ridge and the Sembalun valley laid out below like a working map of rice paddies and village roofs. You climb through short grass and volcanic scree, wind briefing your shoulders, until Rinjani's bulk fills the eastern horizon and clouds crawl off the crater like an obliging audience.
moderate.
2 days (approx. 48 hours).
Suitable for hikers with basic fitness able to manage up to 3 hours of uphill hiking with a daypack; overnight camping experience helpful but not required.
The uphill portion from Sembalun village typically takes under three hours at a steady pace; many groups break the experience into a 2-day itinerary with camping.
No technical gear is required and local guides are usually provided; porters and tents are commonly included in package tours.
The dry season (roughly May–September) offers the most reliable weather and clearest views of Mount Rinjani.
Pergasingan sits around 1,700 m—most people acclimatize without issue, but take it easy if you’ve recently arrived from sea level and stay hydrated.
The slopes around Sembalun are traditional Sasak agricultural land; Pergasingan’s designation as a Taman Wisata Alam protects its grassland and cultural landscapes.
Stick to established paths, use the provided sanitation facilities at campsites, and pack out all non-biodegradable waste to minimize impact on the fragile highland ecosystem.
