In honour of the week of Saint Patrick's Day- March 17th- Dublin Decoded are running one of our favourite tours, exploring the remarkable, richly layered history of that area of the Liberties jus West of Saint Patrick's Cathedral.
We will meet you in the park out outside the Cathedral, then guide you around an extraordinary range of history from Blackpitts, Newmarket, Meath Street and the Coombe. We will explore the rich industrial heritage of this neglected area of the Liberties, learn about the 18th century tanning, distilling, brewing and textile industries, and about water-powered mills from medieval monks to the present day, run off now-unseen underground rivers.
Learn about philanthropic housing, and historic 1600s architecture including Dutch Billies, Alms Houses, Guild halls and Dower Houses, much of it still hidden in plain sight!
Learn about the area in revolution in 1916, about catastrophic rivers of burning whiskey and much, much more.
This is one of our very favourite tours.
