You step off the small plane into a wind that seems to have opinions about everything — about where you should go next, about how fast you should move. In El Calafate the air is cold and sharp, the horizon cut by the distant sweep of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Three days later, in Ushuaia, the Beagle Channel lays out like a slate of moving silver, islands dotted with cormorants and the squat red of the Les Éclaireurs lighthouse. This six-day loop stitches two of Argentina’s most elemental places together: glacier, channel and tundra.

Adventure Tips

Layer for wind and sun

Pack a windproof outer layer and insulating mid-layers — conditions change from sunny and calm at the lake to gusty on the channel within an hour.

Morning at Perito Moreno

Arrive early for softer light, fewer crowds on the walkways and a better chance to watch calving from quieter vantage points.

Footwear for mixed terrain

Use waterproof boots with good tread for boardwalks, muddy trails and wet beach approaches on island stops.

Book optional glacier hikes in advance

Mini-Trekking and Big Ice require extra reservations and longer park time — request upgrades when booking to secure a spot.
