A cold wind cuts across the puna as the minivan climbs away from Huaraz, and the Andean peaks tighten around the road. By midmorning the landscape opens into high grasslands and salt-streaked lakes; the glacier at Pastoruri sits ahead like a blue shoulder against black rock, still broad — roughly 8 sq km and about 4 km long — but visibly receding.
