Morning light on the Pan-American Highway flattens the coastal desert into a long band of gold as the bus hums south from Lima. By mid-morning the sea reappears and the Ballestas Islands hunker offshore like dark punctuation marks; the swell pushes up gulls and a chorus of barking sea lions that insist you slow down and look.
