The morning opens on the wind-swept shore outside Paracas, salt spray on your lips and a low horizon of rock islands rising like islands of time. A two-hour boat run threads around the Ballestas Islands, where barking sea lions haul out on black rock and flocks of guano-streaked seabirds wheel above—Humboldt penguins bob offshore like small black comets. Later the bus slides inland toward Huacachina, where the oasis sits in stark contrast: a pocket of palms ringed by steep, shifting dunes that dare you to climb.
moderate.
12 hours.
Good baseline fitness for short climbs, sandboarding and handling dune buggies; long day requires stamina.
The wildlife boat portion is about two hours round-trip, giving time to approach the islands and observe sea lions, seabirds, and, often, Humboldt penguins.
No prior experience is required—guides give basic instruction and most tours provide boards; expect to learn by trial and occasional falls.
The day includes boat steps and dune buggy transfers; infants and small children can usually participate, but it's not recommended for people with serious spinal or cardiovascular conditions.
Carry a small amount of cash for purchases and a camera; tastings and a short lunch are typically included but extras may cost more.
The Paracas coast has long been a marine resource zone influenced by the cold Humboldt Current; Ica’s valleys developed irrigation agriculture and grape cultivation under colonial-era haciendas.
Ballestas and Paracas are part of marine reserve protections aimed at preserving breeding colonies and guano habitats; stick to boats’ viewing routes and avoid disturbing wildlife.
