Before dawn the van peels away from Lima and the road opens south—flat, sun-bleached coastal desert giving way to wind-sculpted cliffs. By midmorning the bay at Paracas arrives: the sea is sharp and alive, pushing its spray against the bow as the boat threads toward the Ballestas Islands. There, barking sea lions arrest attention and Humboldt penguins bob like punctuation marks among kelp-strewn rocks.
