You climb into the saddle as trade winds push across the pasture; the horse shifts under you and a line of kiawe and ironwood trees throws a moving shadow across the trail. The path rises slowly from shaded forest into open grassland, and ahead the North Shore coastline unfolds — Laie’s shoreline and the reef beyond glitter like a promise.
