Dawn in Palmer has a clean, metallic light — you meet at the Visitor Center, load into an air-conditioned vehicle, and head up the old mining roads toward the Talkeetna foothills. The forest opens in stages: spruce and birch tighten into boreal woods, then give way to alder choked drainages and finally to stony alpine tundra where glaciers once gouged the ridgelines. Eska Creek and its cascades punctuate the route, waterfalls daring you to pause and listen.
