You step out of the minivan into a thin, crystalline air and the slope ahead seems to be painted by weather itself. Palcoyo’s terraces of red, yellow and green roll across low ridgelines; wind tugs at your jacket like a guide encouraging you onward. The trek begins across high puna grass and compacted trail, with the Andes opening east toward Ausangate and a horizon of glacial shoulders.
