You push off from Štinjan bay as morning light pries open the Adriatic — the sea is flattened to glass and tiny wakes outline your kayak. The guide points toward a shabby lighthouse, then toward two islands: Jerolim, with its Roman quarry scars and roaming peacocks, and Kozada, a low, windswept rock that guarded Pula Bay through Austro-Hungarian times.
