A cool Pacific breeze pushes across the harbor as single kayaks slip away from the boat basin and into the Chetco River’s broad, clean water. In the first minutes you paddle past moored fishing boats and Coast Guard vessels, then ease into a quieter estuary where sloughs and coves open like secret rooms. Pelicans wheel low, kingfishers dart at the surface, and the river seems to invite steady, deliberate strokes.

The Chetco River flows through ancestral lands of the Tolowa and Chetco peoples and has long supported salmon runs and coastal fisheries that shaped Brookings’ harbor economy.
The Chetco’s Wild and Scenic designation protects river segments and emphasizes water quality; practice leave-no-trace on shore stops and avoid disturbing birds and estuarine vegetation.
