A low sun lifts the sand; an air-conditioned van hums away from Cairo at 06:00 and the modern cityscape thins into ochre horizon. By late morning the landscape hardens into black volcanic ridges and, later, into the chalky silhouettes of the White Desert — mushroom-shaped limestone sculptures carved by wind and time.
