Dust lifts off the road as the van pushes inland from the coast, and the air changes from humid sea-warmth to the dry, sun-baked scent of savannah. By late afternoon you’re in Tsavo West, where acacia silhouettes cut against a wide sky and distant ridgelines of volcanic rock give the land a sharp profile. A short game drive before dusk introduces elephants ambling like patient giants and zebra punctuating the grass.
