Dawn finds you on a ridge of stone and sky — the Great Wall running like a weathered spine across serrated hills, wind pushing cold at your ears as you unpack the tent waiting beside the ramparts. The first day moves from a 2.5-hour drive out of Beijing through farmland and an ancient village to Gubeikou, where pounded flagstones and steep steps test cadence and footing for 3–4 hours before reaching the 24-Hole Guard Tower.
moderate.
2 days.
Suitable for travelers with moderate fitness who can hike 3–5 hours on uneven, stepped terrain and carry a daypack; not recommended for those with limited mobility.
Expect about a 2.5-hour drive from central Beijing to the Gubeikou meeting point, depending on traffic.
The itinerary notes tents at the campsite; confirm with the operator whether sleeping pads or bags are included or if you should bring your own.
The hiking involves uneven stone staircases and steady climbs; participants should be comfortable hiking several hours with short steep sections but advanced technical climbing is not required.
Lunches and some dinners are included per the itinerary, but carry personal water and snacks; there are limited refill options on the wall.
Gubeikou and Jinshanling were strategic Ming dynasty military sections with towers and battlements designed for signaling and defense along the northern frontier.
This section of the Great Wall is vulnerable to erosion and litter; visitors are asked to stay on established paths, pack out waste and follow local regulations to protect stonework and vegetation.
