A dusty morning highway unfurls out of Siem Reap and, within hours, rice plains spread wide like fields of low green fire. By late afternoon the narrow bamboo train—locally called a norry—slides along a reclaimed railbed, wind pushing through the villagers’ laundry and the scent of frying rice. At dusk, the rim of Phnom Sampeau darkens and a cloud of bats erupts from the cave, a living curtain against the sinking sun.
