You step off the Port Douglas jetty and the boat’s engines hum like a patient animal waking to the day. Salt spray lifts from the coral-blue horizon as the custom Calypso vessel slides away from the coast, heading east toward the outer reef where coral gardens rise from deep water like living islands.

No — the cruise offers guided snorkeling and introductory (discover) dives that don’t require certification; certified divers must show proof of certification to do advanced dives.
The price covers transfers (if booked), buffet lunch, afternoon tea, snorkelling equipment use, guided snorkel tours and an interpretive reef talk; an Environmental Management Charge is included from July 2023.
Children under 12 are not permitted to dive; they can snorkel when accompanied by an adult and must follow all safety briefings.
Trips can be cancelled for high winds or unsafe conditions — if Calypso cancels you’ll be offered an alternative date or full refund; individual cancellations usually require 24 hours’ notice for full refund.
This part of the Reef lies within the Traditional Sea Country of the Kuku Yalanji people; European charting and later tourism developed from the 19th century as access improved via Port Douglas.
The reef is protected under the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and UNESCO recognition; adhere to no-touch rules, use reef-safe products and follow operator guidance to reduce impact.
