In 1951, my mother married my father, pulling up roots to start a new life on a dairy farm near Brechin, ON. She left behind her family and entire friend support network in Hanover, which must have been difficult.

My mother showed strong fortitude and got busy acquainting herself with new rural neighbours.

She graciously extended hospitality to anyone who stopped by, planned or unplanned.

How did she do this? Through serving tea and sweets!!

As a child, I fondly remember Mom serving tea and dessert after every meal. Whether we dined at the kitchen table, vacationed in our small camper or had a summer meal served outdoors, the meal ended with tea and sweets!

Mom always said you need the right kind of equipment to make a good pot of tea, which included boiled water, a fine china teapot, primed with hot water; her best "Old Country Roses" china tea cups, and her favourite Orange Pekoe Tea.

For my mother, serving tea was not just an act of hospitality. I believe she served tea as an act of love. It was a way to share the local news with neighbours and reconnect with her long-distance family when they visited.

Serving tea and dessert at the dinner table was a way for our mother to slow down and spend a few moments connecting with her 5 children before everyone began the evening barn chores. How I miss those days!
