About This Adventure

Experience the wonders of nature and history at Homeschool Days at the Coastal Discovery Museum! Engage in hands-on activities tailored for various age groups, from exploring alligators to discovering shorebirds and dolphins. Each session promises unique adventures, fostering a shared love for learning among students and their families.

Join us for Homeschool Days at the Coastal Discovery Museum, where students and their families explore the Lowcountry’s nature, history and culture together. Each session is tailored to different age groups, ensuring engaging, hands-on experiences for students. But it’s not just for kids—adult leaders and teachers will find plenty to discover alongside their students. Don’t miss this chance to make education a shared adventure!

Creature Feature: Alligators!

April 25, 2025 - 10:00-10:45am Meets at the Coastal Discovery Museum

Get ready for a gator adventure! Discover the amazing life of these reptiles, touch a live baby alligator, and make your own gator craft to take home. Great for students ages 5-8. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult chaperone. Multiple adults can register. Bringing a younger child who isn’t participating? Include them in your registration. Limited spots available; only registered guests will be admitted.

$2 per adult $6 per student (ages 5+) $0 non-participant child (ages 0-4)

Sharing with Shorebirds

May 5th, 2025 - 10:00-11:00 Meets at the Coastal Discover Museum

In this introduction to shorebirds, students learn about their unique traits and why beach habitats are vital for their survival. While playing the migration game, students gain an appreciation for the challenges shorebirds face and what we can do to protect them.

Students take home newfound knowledge along with and directions for the Sharing with Shorebirds sign project. Projects are submitted to the Coastal Discovery Museum and used to promote environmental awareness throughout the community. Selected projects will be displayed in our annual Conservation in the Classroom exhibition (July/August). One sign will be chosen to be printed and displayed at a local beach.

• Sharing with Shorebirds is tailored to students ages 7 and older.
• All children must be accompanied and supervised by a registered adult chaperone.
• Limited spots available; only registered guests admitted into the program area.
• Bringing a younger non-participant child along? Please include them in your registration.

Dolphin Defenders / Dolphin Cruise

May 16th, 2025 – 12:30-3:00pm Meet in Broad Creek Marina parking lot at 12:30pm.

Students embark on an educational cruise through the waters and salt marshes of Broad Creek, exploring the world of the bottlenose dolphin. While looking for dolphins, students learn about the traits and adaptations of this charismatic marine mammal and how we can help protect them.

Students take home newfound knowledge along with directions to participate in the Dolphin Defenders letter or poem writing project. Projects are submitted to the Coastal Discovery Museum and used to promote environmental awareness throughout the community. Selected submissions will be displayed in our annual Conservation in the Classroom exhibition (July/August).

• Dolphin Defenders is tailored to students ages 7 and older (all ages can enjoy the Dolphin and Nature Cruise).
• All children must be accompanied and supervised by a registered adult chaperone.
• Limited spots available; only registered guests admitted into the program area.

Meet in the Broad Creek Marina parking lot (between the marina and zipline) at 12:30 pm. We will be on the water from 1 pm - 2:30 pm. The boat departs on time.

Creature Feature: Crabs!

May 28, 2025 – 11:00-11:45am Meets at the Coastal Discovery Museum

Crack open the secrets of crabs and see what makes them unique. Meet live crabs, learn about their lives, and make a crab-themed craft to take home.

Designed for students ages 5-8. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult chaperone. Multiple adults can register. Bringing a younger child who isn’t participating? Please include them in your registration. Limited spots available; only registered guests are admitted.
