Coastal Discovery Museum on Hilton Head Island interprets the natural and cultural history of the Lowcountry through hands-on exhibits, guided outdoor experiences, and seasonal events.
Located on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, the museum offers field trips, kayak and boat tours, workshops, artisan markets, and cultural programs that highlight local ecology and Gullah heritage. Museum naturalists and docents lead experiences such as the Kayak Tour of Jarvis Creek, Dolphin & Nature Cruise in Broad Creek, and the Gullah Heritage Trail Tour. Indoor and family-friendly programs include Lowcountry Reptiles, Critter Meet and Greet, and Discovery Night at the Museum. The Waddell Mariculture Center Tour offers behind-the-scenes access to labs and hatcheries in Bluffton for participants ages 12 and up.
Special events span community markets and seasonal celebrations, from Cocktails & Camellias to Bee Inspired: Celebrating World Bee Day, which features Master Beekeeper David Arnal. The museum hosts the Hilton Head Farmer's Market, Native Plant Sale, Sweetgrass Basket Class, birding outings at Pinckney Island, and educational workshops that connect visitors with local wildlife such as bottlenose dolphins, wading birds, turtles, and snakes. Programming balances conservation education, cultural interpretation, and recreational access to the salt marshes and maritime forests of the Lowcountry.
