Join Alaska artist Kate Powers for Field Sketching 101, a unique workshop at Eklutna Lake where you'll learn to capture nature's beauty with water-soluble tools. Create a collection of nature-inspired sketches while enjoying the outdoors. Perfect for enhancing your appreciation of nature, this engaging experience lasts approximately 2.5 hours.
Capture Alaska's growing season on a silk scarf. Choose plain or a naturally-dyed background color, then arrange fresh leaves over silk to create your own one-of-a-kind silk scarf. While our silk bundles are being heat-processed, learn more about natural dyeing techniques, and how to identify local plants.
Total workshop time is approximately 2 hours. This course is best suited for adult learners and teenagers.
Participants will make one 8"x54" scarf. Option to make a second scarf while at the course (please bring cash; there will be a variety of sizes and styles available).

Ute Riesenkönig Olsson received a Master of Forestry from Duke University and a Master of Science in Ecological Studies from Colorado State University. She taught natural history to all ages at the Eagle River Nature Center for two decades before her retirement. Ute has a special interest in ethnobotany -- how humans have traditionally used plants in Alaska.
Use water-soluble pencils or watercolor pens to easily create vibrant sketches on the go.
Getting there a little before the start time ensures a good spot and time to settle in.
Layer up and wear weather-appropriate clothing as conditions can change quickly near the lake.
A small, lightweight pad keeps you comfortable while sketching on uneven terrain.
Eklutna Lake and the surrounding area are part of the traditional Dena’ina territory, rich with indigenous history and storytelling.
Revel Treks emphasizes Leave No Trace principles, ensuring the preservation of Alaska’s delicate wilderness for future generations.
These tools allow you to easily add water wash effects, making sketches vibrant and dynamic.
