At 3:30 a.m. a van slips out of Puerto Varas and the road climbs toward Osorno’s flank, where pines thin and the world opens to volcanic scree and snowfields. The day moves from dark to pale light as guides run gear checks at the CONAF office (about 1,200 m), then lead a steady push up slopes that give way to glacier—crampons biting, ice axes steady—until the 2,652 m summit rewards you with a full, cold 360° of lakes, ridgelines and neighboring cones.

The route climbs from about 1,200 m to 2,652 m (≈1,450 m gain). Plan for a 10–12 hour day including approach, technical instruction, summit time and descent.
Previous alpine or glacier experience is strongly recommended; guides provide technical instruction but participants must be fit and comfortable with exposure and crampon/ice-axe use.
Technical equipment (helmet, harness, ice axe, crampons, gaiters) is listed as provided, but confirm with the operator and bring your own boots and layers.
Weather can close the route—high winds, whiteout or unstable snow conditions will prompt cancellations or turnarounds; always expect rapid changes and follow guide decisions.
Osorno has been a landmark for Mapuche communities and later German settlers; its imposing cone influenced settlement patterns and local culture around Lake Llanquihue.
