A cool Atlantic breeze lifts off the black volcanic ledges as you gather on the concrete terraces of Lido Galomar Bathing Complex in Caniço. Guides check kit, hand out swim caps and go over the plan: a short warm-up, an acclimatization dip, then a one-hour guided swim along the sheer coastline toward the Garajau Marine Reserve. The sea ahead invites and tests you — currents that nudge you, waves that speak in quick, bright bursts.

Moderate cardiovascular fitness and confidence swimming 400–800 m in open water; comfortable with waves and basic currents.
You should be comfortable in open water and able to swim continuously; guides accommodate less experienced swimmers with closer supervision and shorter routes.
Wetsuit rental can be arranged if requested a few days in advance; the operator provides swim caps and can loan a swim buoy.
The tour operator cancels or reschedules swims in poor weather or unsafe sea conditions; you’re eligible for a full refund if cancelled more than 24 hours before the start.
Lido Galomar is in Caniço and accessible by local bus from Funchal or by taxi; allow extra time for traffic and arrive early for the safety briefing.
Garajau is one of Madeira’s recognized marine-protected spots and has long been used by local fishers and bathers; the nearby Cristo Rei statue dates to the mid-20th century.
Respect the marine reserve rules: don’t feed or touch wildlife, use reef-safe sunscreen, and follow guide instructions to minimize impact.
