You step onto a gravel riverbank and a llama stares back with an almost patient curiosity, the river at your feet daring you downstream while reeds whisper overhead. The Kowhai River Valley opens in a ribbon of pale stones and raised banks, flanked by protected native beech and kanuka that throw dappled light across the trail.
