A damp Mediterranean dawn presses against the stone houses of Kalivia as a line of 4x4s snakes toward the mountain. The road climbs from sea-level olive groves into fir forests, then turns to rock and dust as the valley tightens. By the time you step out at Christakis hut, the clouds have stopped their slow march and the mountain begins to dare you upward.

Good aerobic fitness and experience with sustained uphill hiking and scrambling at altitude
The itinerary is challenging: long day (≈10 hours), steep sections and exposed scrambling at Kakoskala require good fitness and comfort on loose rock.
No technical ropes are typically required on the normal route, but the scramble is exposed — helmets and guide support are advisable if available.
Summer offers the most stable conditions and minimal snow; spring and fall can be good but may include snow patches above 2,200–2,400 m.
Operators may cancel for severe weather; check forecasts and note that some bookings are non-refundable if canceled by participants.
