A damp dawn greets Sa Pa’s stone church as the group assembles; clouds hang low over narrow streets and the first light slides across the corrugated roofs. The climb up Ham Rong begins on paved gardens and stone steps that pry open views of the town below. As the ridge opens, wind and cloud push against you, and the valley spreads with stepped rice fields that seem to move with the weather.
