Mists press against the slopes of the Virunga range as you step from the vehicle and into a forest that smells of damp earth and moss. Trails wind between towering bamboo and stands of giant lobelia; the air is thin enough to remind you you are climbing volcanic shoulders. Gorillas do not rush; they move with a deliberate curiosity, and the forest often seems to hold its breath while you watch a silverback inspect the visitors.
