The sun is low when the van slips out of Nairobi at 5:00 AM, headlights cutting across tea-terraced hills as the road rises toward the Laikipia plateau. By midmorning the landscape opens to wide, golden plains and riverine thickets; Ol Pejeta’s distant acacia silhouettes and the blunt bulk of Mount Kenya’s shoulder frame the horizon.

Basic fitness — mostly vehicle-based but you should be comfortable sitting long stretches and doing short walks at the sanctuary.
Expect roughly 3–4 hours each way depending on traffic and road conditions — departures are early to maximize time in the reserve.
Ol Pejeta hosts the Big Five; sightings depend on season and luck, but rhino and elephant sightings are among the more reliable encounters.
Chimpanzees at Sweetwaters live in large natural enclosures and are observed at a respectful distance; touching or feeding is not permitted to protect their health and behavior.
The tour is family-friendly, but infants must sit on laps and long travel hours can be demanding for very young children.
Ol Pejeta was formed from traditional ranchlands on the Laikipia plateau and reoriented toward conservation and community projects, growing into one of Kenya’s largest private wildlife conservancies.
The conservancy runs active anti-poaching units, community outreach and species rehabilitation programs; visitors support funding and awareness but should minimize single-use plastics and follow park rules.
