2.5 Hours
Explore the beautiful scenery and wildlife of the Ohau Channel at your own leisure by Kayak. We will provide you with kayaks, equipment, maps and info and transport you from our base to Lake Rotorua. Paddle along the lake and down the Ohau Channel to Lake Rotoiti and down the lakes Okere Arm. We will pick you up at the other end and take you back to the base.
You can start by practicing on Lake Rotorua (if wind conditions allow) before heading through the control gates onto the channel. The first half of the trip consists of slow moving water. You need to manoeuvre the kayak to avoid obstacles such as low hanging trees on the sides. Once you exit the channel you are just under half way, but it is possible to finish just after the channel exit if you want a shorter trip. On the 2nd half the current slows down significantly so a bit more paddle power is required as you make your way down the Okere Arm of Lake Rotoiti.
We would recommend that you know how to swim and have kayaked before. If not you may want to consider a freedom hire in a sheltered lake environment rather than the moving water of the channel. If you do not meet the above criteria or you would prefer a guide we can arrange guided tours on request to any of the local lakes or try our scheduled Guided Hot Pools trip to Manupirua Springs Hot Pools or Evening BBQ & Glow Worms Trip.
All equipment and transfers from our base provided. A minimum of 4 people are required
