The ferry slips away from Pier 33 as the city tightens behind you: a skyline of glass and brick receding while the bay lays out like a cool, briny sheet. Wind tugs at jackets and the Golden Gate appears, then narrows — a rust-colored arch framing the ascent to Alcatraz. Approaching the island, the cellhouse rises off the rock like a relic with stories, and gulls wheel above, as if insisting you pay attention.
