The engine clicks, the guide checks your helmet, and the Atlantic salt breeze tugs at your bandana as the convoy peels away from the coastal road. You climb onto a narrow ridge above turquoise water, then drop into a mosaic of dirt tracks that thread past sugarcane fields, shuttered storefronts and stands selling rum and empanadas. The ride feels immediate—wheels throwing up dust, palms brushing past like an impatient hand—while the landscape alternates between open coastline and the green foothills of the Cordillera Septentrional.

Puerto Plata’s coastline and foothills were historically linked to sugar, amber and rum trade; many villages grew around plantations and maritime commerce.
Stick to marked trails and avoid disturbing riverbanks—the area’s coastal and freshwater habitats are sensitive to erosion and litter; local operators encourage reuse and proper waste disposal.
