You set off from the station with a compact rental bike and the town of Obuse unfurling like a map of low roofs and narrow lanes. The air carries the crisp sweetness of orchards and the faint scent of roasted chestnuts; the road climbs and falls gently, framed by hydrangea hedges in spring and rows of apple trees come harvest. A short ride leads to Gansho-in Temple, where Hokusai’s phoenix looks back from the ceiling with uncanny motion, a cultural pause before you push on to the Kobayashi Farm.
