Geologically the Catalinas are a fault-block range uplifted millions of years ago; culturally the slopes have long been used by Tohono O'odham and later settlers who homesteaded seasonal gardens and summer camps. The route visits three lookout points chosen for wide valley views, native flora and cooler air—binoculars and bottled water are provided to frame desert washes and distant ridgelines.
