The tuk-tuk hums out of Funchal and the city falls away into terraces and steep ridges; the Atlantic glints to your left while the road narrows and the mountains begin to close in. At Eira do Serrado the world opens into the Curral das Freiras — a bowl of steep walls and a tiny village sitting like a secret between peaks. Wind moves through the valley as if testing your resolve, pushing clouds and light across the cliffs.

Curral das Freiras grew as a refuge village when nuns hid from pirate raids; the name means 'Nuns' Valley' and reflects that history.
High-traffic viewpoints are managed to limit erosion; stay on paths, avoid trampling vegetation and support local guides to reduce visitor impact.
