You step out of the air-conditioned vehicle into a cool forest that smells of cedar and river spray, the road behind you curling like a ribbon through the mountains. In Nikko the day moves at the pace of falling water and carved wood—Toshogu’s lacquered gates glitter, Kegon Waterfall throws itself over the cliff, and Lake Chuzenji lies high and still at 1,269 meters, a broad mirror under the sky.
