You push off from a low wooden dock and the city’s hotel lights fall away; the lagoon opens like a shaded room where mangroves lean close and the water remembers the tide. The guide eases the boat into narrow channels and the mangrove roots seem to reach out, part curiosity, part barrier, as herons and ibises lift and resettle on exposed branches.

American crocodiles are visible from a distance; guides keep safe separation and you should never feed or attempt to approach them.
