You step off the minivan onto a hard, sun-warmed plateau where limestone cliffs drop into narrow ravines that dare you to look over the edge. The wind moves through thorny scrub and low macchia, carrying faint echoes of church bells from the Sassi below. Underfoot the ground is broken, a mix of packed earth, gravel and exposed rock that creaks with the history of footsteps long gone.
