Dawn creeps through the mountain pines as the minivan winds up from Ubud, trading humid lowland rice terraces for cool highland air. By midmorning you are stepping onto forest paths—stone steps, muddy switchbacks and bamboo bridges—that lead down toward plunging cascades and glassy mountain lakes. Sekumpul and Banyuwana arrive as chapters in a single story: multiple ribbons of water spilling through fern-carpeted gullies, the sound of water daring you into the plunge pool.
