Drive out of Pokhara and the valley tightens: the road follows the Kali Gandaki, which prowls the landscape below as if daring you to keep moving. By the time you reach Jomsom—about 8 hours from Pokhara at roughly 2,700 m—the river has carved a channel between steep, arid slopes and the first stone-built villages appear, roofs low against wind.
moderate.

Moderate fitness—able to handle long vehicle days, short walks at altitude, and stair climbs at temple sites.
Muktinath itself does not require the restricted Upper Mustang permit; standard travel documents and local vehicle permits arranged by the operator suffice.
Muktinath sits around 3,700–3,800 m; some visitors experience mild symptoms—take it slow, stay hydrated and avoid alcohol before reaching high altitude.
Overnights are in mountain lodges—basic rooms with heating and shared or private bathrooms depending on location and season.
Travelers should have moderate fitness and no serious cardiovascular or spinal issues; the operator notes it’s not recommended for pregnant travelers or those with significant health limitations.
The Kaligandaki corridor was a historic salt-trade route between Tibet and Nepal; Marpha prospered on apple orchards after the decline of trans-Himalayan caravans.
The rain-shadow ecosystem is fragile—pack out trash, minimize single-use plastics and use community-run lodges to support local economies.
