You emerge from the chauffeur-driven SUV under a cool coastal fog, the Golden Gate's iron arch receding behind you as Fort Baker slides into view and sparkling wine is passed around like a welcome note. Start early to avoid crowdsArrive at Muir Woods before late morning; the grove fills quickly and early light makes photography easier.

Bring layered clothingBay fog can keep mornings cool while Napa warms quickly, so pack a light jacket you can shed during tastings.

Keep trails cleanMuir Woods requires Leave No Trace behavior—pack out trash and avoid stepping off marked paths to protect root systems.

Recommended gear

Sturdy walking shoes: Provide grip and support on damp boardwalks and packed dirt trails.
Layered jacket: Morning fog and ocean breeze can be chilly—layers keep you comfortable through changing temperatures.
Reusable water bottle: Staying hydrated between tastings helps preserve energy and judgment on an active day.
Sunglasses and sunscreen: Afternoon sun in Napa can be strong; protection makes vineyard time more pleasant.
