Muddy Explorers Spring — Hands-On Homeschool Farm Sessions in Inverarity, Scotland

Muddy Explorers SPRING SEASON at Newton Farm in Inverarity, Scotland offers homeschooled children aged 3–12 a concentrated hour of hands-on farm learning within a block of 6–8 weekly sessions. On arrival you pass patchwork pasture and hawthorn hedgerows to a working livestock yard where lambs, chicks, calves and piglets set the pace for the morning. Led by Jodi, the farm educator, and coordinated with Farmer Lou, each session pairs animal care—feeding hens and ducks, collecting eggs, meeting alpacas, miniature donkeys and goats—with whole-body outdoor play and a themed craft or story in The Cart Shed. What makes this experience stand out in Angus is its farming-calendar rhythm: weeks shift from lambing and chicks to cows and crops, potatoes and peas, concluding with pigs and goats. Children move from sensory discovery—feeling fleece and warm chicks—to small practical tasks that build confidence and early STEM concepts. Groups are capped at 15 children, so every child gets a turn with tools sized for little hands, protective aprons, and take-home crafts that extend learning at home. The Cart Shed functions as classroom, café and craft studio: parents get a free adult ticket per paid child and can relax on-site while extras order a simple lunchbox or hot baking. Practicalities matter here—handwashing stations, an accessible toilet and pathways that can take a pram or wheelchair make visits easier, though natural, uneven ground means sturdy footwear is essential. The farm’s approach balances authenticity and safety: activities adapt to animal welfare and weather without losing the core promise of real farm work. This programme also links to wider community initiatives—watch for the Wee Angus Adventurers passport trail that rewards children who visit neighbouring farms. For families who favour slow, tactile learning rather than screens, Muddy Explorers delivers hands-on ecology, seasonal food literacy and social skills in one lively hour. Whether your child is chasing a newly hatched chick, learning to plant peas, or proudly presenting a craft from found feathers and wool, the session leaves them with a clearer sense of where food comes from and why farms matter. Booking is essential and sessions run spring term by term; those wanting to bring extra adults, dogs on leads, or make access arrangements should contact the team in advance. For visiting families, Muddy Explorers is a practical, joyful portal to rural life just north of Dundee, built for curious hands and open air. Sessions are sold as a block—prices are published per child for seven-week blocks with discounts for siblings—and a one-week taster is available by arrangement. On-site parking and clear check-in procedures make arrival simple, and the team can accommodate additional needs from dietary requirements to mobility aids when notified in advance, and practical advice on arrival.
