Before dawn the air-conditioned minibus eases out of Sharm El Sheikh and the desert opens like a page of rock and loose sand. For four hours the road traces broad wadis and low ridgelines until the lights of St. Catherine fade and the silhouette of Mount Moses—Jebel Musa—rises into view.
