The trail begins with the Rift Valley opening beneath you: a raw, steep flank of volcanic rock giving way to a wide, forested caldera. By mid-morning the sun finds the rim and the wind pushes walkers along the lip; birds voice the scrub while small herds graze on lower slopes. This is a hike that feels immediate — climb, crest, look down into a crater that has been quiet for centuries.
