You roll off the tarmac and into volcanic dust; the jeep climbs, tires crunching on recent lava and older basalt slabs, and the wind first smells of ash then pine. On Mt Etna’s southeastern flank the landscape shifts quickly—black flows, scrubby pistachio and broom, and the sudden bowl of the Valle del Bove opening like a raw wound in the mountain.

Visitors should stay on designated tracks to avoid fragile regrowth on recent lava; support local guides who follow park regulations to limit erosion and disturbance.
