Dawn spills across Lake Wakatipu as the van pulls away from Queenstown, the mountain road opening like a drawn breath toward the Southern Alps. The group traces glacial shorelines and climbs through tussock country; by midday the turquoise sweep of Lake Pukaki and the serrated face of Aoraki/Mount Cook dominate the view. Wind and light keep changing the mountain’s mood—sometimes a hard-edged monolith, sometimes softened by drifting cloud.
