Before dawn the trail is a moving line of headlamps threading up black volcanic sand—each step a small victory as the sky shifts from ink to bruised indigo. By the time you reach the crater rim, the sun pushes itself over the caldera and the entire lake below catches fire. Steam hisses nearby; vendors sell hot drinks and eggs cooked in geothermal vents.
