You leave the hotel before dawn, and the van cuts through sleepy Balinese lanes toward the black silhouette of Mount Batur. The trail is cool and still; volcanic scree crunches underfoot as headlamps pick out the ridgeline. By the time the sky blushes, you’re on a narrow crest looking across the Batur caldera — steam rising from fumaroles, Lake Batur lying low and reflective below. The guide hands out boiled eggs warmed by the volcano’s heat; the air tastes faintly of sulfur and coffee.
