Before dawn the jeep slides up a narrow road and the sky over Batur takes on a slow, cold blue. Small groups step out into humid air, boots crunching on volcanic scree while flashlights pick out the faint track. The climb is steady: a series of switchbacks and volcanic ash that gives beneath each step, and then the summit opens—an uncompromising rim where the sun breaks over a caldera lake and the landscape exhales.
